Abstract

The main emphasis of this paper revolves around the question whether there exists a generalized Ethos and in which implementation these ethical assignments manifest themselves. My deliberations concerning this question are concentrated from the outset on Judaism and its sages whom we designate as prophets. The Decalogue as it was communicated from Moses to the exiled is, up to the present time, for all monotheistic Religions normative. My involvement with Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis confirmed that its ethical substrate interprets the implications of the Decalogue for our time and could serve as the possibility for intensive self-awareness and life management. A passage is dedicated to the greatest of the Prophets, Jesus of Nazareth, which shall honour the exceptional nature of this existence. My recourse to the Jewish philosopher of Religion, Emmanuel Lévinas shall illustrate how much this authority of the Torah and the Talmud is indebted to the teachings and wisdom of the Man from Nazareth - Lévinas' Ethic of the Responsibility for the countenance of the other person is profoundly jesuanically characterized and is an ethical guiding principle for our world, our coexistence in precarious times.

Keywords:

Ethos-Project, Sinai-Law-making, Ethic of the Psychoanalysis, Jesuanical existence, Ethic of the countenance of the other person.
